Arsenal star Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ move to Rome has come considerably closer, with the north London club set to strike a deal for the England international’s exit this month.

Sportsmail reported on Monday that Maitland-Niles was due to meet with head coach Mikel Arteta this week to inform the Spaniard of his intention to leave this month.

The Italian club have submitted a loan offer for the 24-year-old, with an option to buy the Arsenal academy graduate this summer.

Arsenal are expected to respond to Roma’s offer within the next 24 hours with a view to sealing their exit.

While there is no final deal yet, the deal is moving in the right direction.

Maitland-Niles want to join Roma, and if Arsenal end the deal at the last minute, they will choose to stay in north London.

That scenario would see him enter the final 12 months of his contract, leaving Arsenal in danger of losing Maitland-Niles for nothing next year.

But now it looks like Maitland-Niles is on the verge of making his wish to move to Rome, which is led by Jose Mourinho, come true.

Maitland-Niles and Arteta had already had heart-to-heart talks during the later stages of the summer transfer window where the utility player was told he would get the chance to play more often as the club pushed back the approaches to Everton.

The 24-year-old has only made two Premier League starts since then.
